Where is Mount Moriah in the Bible located now?
It’s difficult to determine the exact location of Moriah, because even the ancient Jews did not know exactly where it was located. Classical Judaism thought that Mount Moriah was in or near Jerusalem, owing to 2 Chronicles 3:1, which mentions that Solomon built the Temple over a threshing floor given to him by Araunah the Jebusite on a mountain called Moriah. However, there has been debate since then whether the Moriah of Genesis and the Moriah of 2 Chronicles refer to the same place.
Some alternative theories suggest that Moriah refers to a mountainous region, rather than the name of a particular mountain. Another theory says the name comes from the word for the Amorites, who lived in the land of Canaan. Yet another theory says it is actually the word “Moreh,” which is the oak grove where Abraham built an altar to God in Genesis 12. This would place it in the land of Shechem, which was in Samaria.
In short, we don’t know exactly where Moriah is, though its location has been unclear for a very long time. Leading theories suggest it was near Jerusalem or Shechem, though it’s possible it was located elsewhere. Considering how long ago Abraham lived even compared to the ancient Jews, it’s understandable that some historical details would be lost.
