Is reading the book Da Vinci code wrong?
If you love reading thriller novels, you will most probably consider Dan Brown’s books including the Davinci Code. (if your English is too good, you may find his writing a bit below par).
Brown goes at length in his novels to ‘make you feel’ that his novels have historic realities which were hidden but are unraveled for the first time. (The US bishops website issued a documentary calling DaVinci Code as a ‘museum of errors’ after the novel became a huge success and people started having doubts). Some people, who are not exposed to counter viewpoints regarding their faith, will read the ‘DaVinci Code’ and feel their faith shaken a bit. By the way, the novel emphatically states that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and had children and everything is covered up by the Vatican!!! Not to mention false claims against Christ’s divinity, distorted view of Gnostic Gospels, painting Opus Dei in a bad light etc. His novels follow a pattern, which you will discover if you read his other books too. Most of his books are a cocktail of art, symbols, religion, and mystery and that could be the reason why the Catholic Church is featured mostly in his novels (even though predominantly in a negative way) because no other place but the catholic church can offer such a rich variety of all the ingredients Brown wants. Others who can put up a token of competition could be Jewish or Muslim hierarchy but Brown is prudent enough to know that he does not want to meet the fate of Salman Rushdie!
If you have time to spare, and can find nothing better to do, why not read it? As a work of imaginative fiction. But I warn you – neither your faith, grasp of history or your language will improve as a result!!! But if in the process, you take a novel (even a best selling one) as a reality and feel the ground of your faith shaking up a bit, just realise how shallow it had been all along and use it as a wake up call to get real about your faith. Without a sound and solid faith illumined from above and backed by reason, we will be sitting ducks to the empty philosophies rampant in the world that does not lead us to the truth or real happiness.
